This seemingly voluntary shutdown follows the recent shut-down of KickAss Torrents and blocking of Pirate Bay domains. ExtraTorrent had been around since 2006 and with millions of daily visitors, eventually became the second largest torrent site out there. Of course, this kind of attention certainly made it a target for law enforcement and entertainment industry groups. While this (or anything for that matter) hasn't been cited as a reason for the shutdown, it's more reasonable to believe that than the owners of the site were just tired of doing it.
Dusty torrent
Downloading torrents has always been a mixed bag and is usually associated with illegal activity from a copyright point of view. Just this week hackers tried to ransom a stolen copy of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 to Disney, but Disney refused to fork over the Bitcoins. Why would they? The movie is going to make millions at the box office regardless of being torrented. Disney is currently working with the FBI to catch the hackers.
Whether or not this is a foreboding warning to the remaining torrent sites is yet to be determined. Whatever the case may be, if you are in the casual torrenting business, be sure to use a VPN to protect your privacy and virus scan everything. Don't click on anything that links to a previously shut down torrent site, as it's most likely a phishing site now or something else just as nefarious.
We theoretically investigate conditions for the refraction of long-wavelength dust acoustic waves by arrays of periodic cylinders in a dusty plasma. This is based on a recent analysis of the refraction of shallow water waves by periodic cylinder arrays (Hu and Chan, Phys. Rev. Lett.95 (2005), 154501). In the dusty plasma case, however, the boundary conditions involve the formation of voids around the cylinders. Possible experimental conditions are discussed.
