It’s in Toronto’s best interest to keep its waterfront development plans at a minimum, according to Canada’s top diplomat.
In an interview with the Toronto Star, David MacNaughton, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, said it is not a priority for his country to take part in the massive development of Toronto’s waterfront.
“I don’t think we should go out and draw the red line and redraw the whole thing. That would be pretty presumptuous of us. Toronto has so many other places to build in, but the rest of Canada does need to look at these waterfront developments,” MacNaughton said.
The world’s biggest urban planning exercise in decades is underway to revitalize Toronto’s waterfront as cities in England, France, Germany and the Netherlands are set to make submissions for detailed plans to construct massive development at the city’s once-empty shoreline.
Currently, Toronto has a series of plans in the works to redevelop a stretch of the city’s waterfront that stretches from the Don River to the Humber River.
Routes have been identified for the development of more than a million square metres of commercial and residential space in the west end of Toronto, which would consist of four, 25-acre clusters connected by a series of green spaces.
MacNaughton told the Star the plans for the waterfront are still in the works and not a done deal.
“No city in North America would ever be foolish enough to open up its red lines and say, ‘We’ve already chosen the place. This is where we’re going to put it,’” he said.
MacNaughton said any development along Toronto’s waterfront would be very expensive to construct.
“It takes time to build. It’s very difficult to get financing for any kind of construction.”
Canada’s Conservative government has long said it has no interest in having Canada develop a massive waterfront development.
“The federal government would not have a position on what other Canadians decided to do with their own land,” MacNaughton said. “We just want to get on with our business.”
