If you’ve been a fan of the west coast style of funk, you have probably had your eyes on this artist on Instagram. His name is Scarbee Funk and he has been really gaining popularity on the internet. In just a few years, he has already amassed quite a following by posting his music and instruments that are worth more than most peoples cars put together! "From the start I had a love for funk, but I never had any kind of musical training or formal education on music. It wasn't something my parents really encouraged. He originally began his career as a musician while living in an apartment complex in South Africa. "I was seventeen when I moved into an apartment complex that had the biggest basement, called the Castle compound with thirty-six residents. Thirty-six rooms, three levels of underground parking with lifts, swimming pools and several entertainment areas including a pub called Soweto's Blues Club." - Scarbee Funk's Restless Quest for Funky Sounds While living there, Scarbee soon befriended a young man named Roy Moody who is also an accomplished guitarist. "The first time I met him, I had my guitar and he showed me a few of his riffs. We sat in each other's rooms and jammed for hours and we became good friends. He had some influence on me, but we were more like brothers." - Scarbee Funk Takes Inspiration from His Childhood Friend This friendship soon led to the creation of an old-school funk duo that would go on to be featured in South Africa's top five for over two years. At the same time, Scarbee was also playing with a band called The Big Cats. This is when he met Kevyn Gammond who is an accomplished bassist and vocalist. "Kevyn was a singer in a top jazz band called The Big Cats. Kevyn and his keyboard player, David Dyer invited me to come play with them. So, I went on stage for the first time to play bass guitar with them at The Castle Compound. That's how I got my first gig." - Scarbee Funk First Gigs as a Bassist In 2005, Scarbee officially moved from South Africa to the United States. This is when he began to use his talents as a guitarist and can be seen doing so in many music videos all across Youtube.
